Woman’s Boots

Polish Immigrant Women's Boots

These two different-sized, unique, brown leather women’s boots date from between the late 1800s to the early 1900s. They exemplify the aspirations of Polish women leaving their homeland on a lengthy journey to America, an event recognized as a great opportunity and accomplishment. For many peasant women in Poland, who often went barefoot during the summer, quality manufactured leather boots were a luxury only worn in church on Sundays or to a wedding ceremony. Buying a new pair before immigrating might have indicated their hopes of attaining a middle-class lifestyle in America, where they expected to find well-paying work.
